How can MATLAB be used on campus?

Using MATLAB for research

  • MATLAB may be used for research on Waterloo-owned or employee-owned computers
  • MATLAB requires a payment of $75 per user (per calendar year) from a university account
  • You cannot share your MATLAB license with others
  • Licensed users are entitled to install and use MATLAB on more than one computer and more than one operating system, provided the computers are university or employee owned
  • Visit the IST Webstore to obtain the software, purchase a license and for important information
  • Stand-alone licenses can only be purchased directly from the Mathworks, and are US$500/user (perpetual; maintenance costs extra but is optional)
  • Toolboxes are extra, typically US$200 (and up) for each toolbox and are available through MathWorks website

Using MATLAB for coursework

  • MATLAB may be used at no charge for coursework on Waterloo-owned computers
    • Students may use MATLAB on Nexus on campus computers, or, depending on faculty, by using remote desktop to connect to the faculty's terminal server
    • Students may use MATLAB on Unix/Linux teaching systems on-campus computers, or, on off-campus computers using X-Windows or other methods supported by their faculty
  • Students may purchase their own copy of Student MATLAB from MathWorks website
  • Instructors may obtain a copy for course preparation purposes (only) by submitting a request to IST Scientific Computing Support

Note: An Internet connection is required for instructor licenses
