Installing EMC NetWorker clients

Because usage charges are based on the amount of data backed up to the backup server, it is very important that for workstations and laptops, the installation step "Select the files to be backed up" is not skipped. If this step is skipped, then all of the files and folders on the client workstation will be backed up. Some server installations can also benefit from careful selection of files to be backed up.

In the following discussion, it is assumed that you will be using the IST backup server named hoover. If you will be backing up to a different server, you will need to substitute the name of your backup server wherever hoover is used in the following instructions.

Obtain software

Download the NetWorker client from the University of Waterloo Software Depot to a suitable location on your local hard drive. C:\Temp\ is usually a good choice for Windows users; the local desktop for Mac OS X users.

Install client

Windows 7/Server 2003 and 2008 installation

  1. Log on with an administrative account.
  2. For Windows 7 and 2008, make sure you right click on the downloaded file and select 'Run as Administrator'.
  3. Double-click on the nwXXX_win_xYYY.ZZZ.exe file you downloaded earlier.
  4. Click on Next to begin installation. Accept the licence agreement and all defaults.
  5. When prompted for Allowed Servers:
    • add hoover.uwaterloo.ca
    • add hoover.private.uwaterloo.ca.
  6. Check Run NetWorker Change Journal on exit. Click Finish to complete the installation. When the NetWorker Change Journal launches, ensure that NetWorker Uses Change Journal and Enable Change Journal for Selected Volumes are both checked. Click Apply, then click Ok for each prompted volume. Finally, click OK to close the NetWorker Change Journal Manager .
  7. Configure the Shortcut: Navigate your way to "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\ Start Menu\Programs\EMC NetWorker\NetWorker User".
  8. Right-click NetWorker User and select Properties.
  9. In the Target field, append " -s hoover.private.uwaterloo.ca". Don't include the quotation marks and be careful that you do not delete the existing contents of the Target field, which should now look like "C:\Program...\winworkr.exe"  -s hoover.private.uwaterloo.ca.
  10. If we are not instructed otherwise we will backup entire system, all drives and directories.
  11. You may now Log off the administrative account and Log on with your regular userid.
  12. Go to the Register for Backup Service step below.

Mac OS X client installation

In the following discussion it is assumed that the user has some familiarity with the Terminal window (Applications:Utilities:Terminal) and unix commands, including the sudo command. If/when you are prompted for a password when you issue a sudo command, you should use the same password that you use when installing applications.
In rare cases sudo does not provide the required access and you may need to log on as root. It is very easy to cause massive damage to the Mac OS X system when logged on as root. If you do decide to log on as the root user, be very sure you know what you are doing.

The download step should have placed file macosx.dmg on your desktop.

  1. Double-click macosx.dmg to run the installer; accept all defaults.
  2. Create file /nsr/res/servers containing two lines.
    • In a Terminal window, enter sudo pico /nsr/res/servers.
    • Type hoover.uwaterloo.ca.
    • Type hoover.private.uwaterloo.ca.
    • Save the file (^O) and exit from pico (^X).
    • Enter sudo /bin/launchctl stop com.emc.NetWorker
  3. Restrict backup service to a limited set of network ports.
    • In a Terminal window, enter sudo /usr/bin/nsrports -S 7937-7941
    • sudo /bin/launchctl stop com.emc.NetWorker
  4. If we are not instructed otherwise we will backup the entire system, all drives and directories.

Verify backup operation

You may now inform the backup server operator that your client installation is complete. The operator will probably make sure that the backup server is able to communicate with your computer to be backed up. The backup operator will also enter the name of your computer into the list of computers to be backed up.

You should receive email each time the backup server attempts to back up your workstation/laptop/server. The success or failure of the backup will be indicated in the email.
